“The chopine was a tall clog worn in primarily in Venice to elevate the lady above both the dirt and the hoi polloi of the street. While relatively few shoes survive from the period of the 15th to 17th century, chopines are inordinately represented in museum collections as they were saved most probably due to their outlandish peculiarity. This exemplar illustrates all the classical characteristics of this specialized form: red or green velvet covering, lobed platform sole trimmed in gold lace with hobnails, gold braid edging, shirred ribbon trim on the vamp, and beard-like tassel below the open toe.”

Marriage of Alexander and RoxanaSodoma, 1517Fresco 
“In his Marriage of Alexander and Roxana, the relaxed bride sits on the edge of a gorgeous bed with posts of gilded Corinthian columns, while three putti disrobe her. Another tugs Alexander in her direction, serving maids depart, and on the right the almost nude god of marriage, accompanied by a torchbearer, presides over the occasion. Luxurious in its surfaces and overripe in its coloring, this frankly voluptuous fresco is the opposite of the moralized mythologies of Botticelli.”

Suggestions for identifying the scene at left include the martyrdom of Saint Matthew, his healing of the citizens of Nadaber, the tower as a reference to a passage in “The Golden Legend,” and Saint Matthew bringing the son of the king of Ethiopia back to life.
X-radiography has revealed the figure of a woman, painted over by the artist, on the right side of the canvas.”
